The 7th century Arab expansion displaced the Byzantines from the region of the Dead Cities. The great churches and monasteries were nonetheless allowed to remain under Christian control. In Al Bara, for instance, one can see mosques and churches standing side by side. The villages however slowly halted their development after the 7th century.
