The inhabitants of the Dead Cities were mainly farmers who cultivated their own fields. A few of them, however, were probably labourers, working for rich owners. There were certainly wild animals in the region, and this is why houses, in general, do not have windows at ground level. The inhabitants were certainly barricaded at home at night. During the day, family life was mainly on the ground floor, where olive oil and wine production took place. Some mosaics show also some local craftsmanship.
