Serjilla
Women had an important role in the family life of the Dead Cities region, as they had throughout Syria, from ancient times to the middle Ages. They were running the house, taking care of the harvest (of the olives), taking care of the animals (sheep), etc. On a mosaic found in the thermal baths in Sergilla a woman was shown standing next to her husband, who was probably the benefactor. This kind of representation testifies to the importance that women enjoyed throughout the region (unlike in Greek society).
