Visiting the Dead Cities
To the occasional visitor, the Dead Cities look most of the time like ghost towns. Yet it is a moving scene, especially when you discover, by chance, that a wall separating two fields is made of bric-à-brac, broken columns, parts of doorways, lintels and carved bits of limestone! The Dead Cities are not yet a tourist destination, and, since visitors are few and far between, you may well be warmly welcomed and offered some tea or soft drinks. The Syrian government intends to orientate its tourism policy towards sustainable development. The idea of a huge tourist complex will therefore be rejected. And in the near future, flexible structures will be available such as walk-ways and bed and breakfast type accommodation.
