Modern irrigation
The desert

A tiny car in Palmyra
The whole oasis of Palmyra is divided into private properties and structured around canalisation systems which distribute water within the properties. This organisation follows the ancient irrigation system. This irrigation technique comes, indeed, from Mesopotamia where Assyrians used canalization systems to get water supplies from the Euphrates river. Another source of income for the city are the sulphurous springs: they were used for thermal baths till 1994, when they dried up.
