The Romans forced the borders of Zenobia’s kingdom; they entered Antioch, won the war and captured queen Zenobia. It is in this period that churches and the Christian religion spread throughout Syria. During the rule of Diocletian (Roman Emperor from 284 to 305 A.D.) the city was transformed into a Roman garrison. He reconstructed the walls of the city in the 4th century A.D. and Justinian added semicircular towers in 7th century A.D. The ruins of Diocletian’s palace and parts of the walls can still be seen on the site.
