The imprisonment of Zenobia
Last Look Upon Palmyra (by Herbert Schmalz)
Around 272 A.D., Emperor Aurelian entered Syria from the North. He encountered the Palmyrean army at Antioch and then went towards Homs, where a great battle was fought. Aurelian won the battle and surrounded the city of Palmyra. Zenobia managed to escape during the night and tried to get help from the Persians. In 272 A.D., the Romans captured her on the Euphrates and took her to Aurelian’s tent. There is no historical evidence of her death. According to some sources, she committed suicide as she wore a ring containing poison. Other stories say that she was taken to Rome and died of cold. Other legends tell that she arrived at Tivoli where she lived for two more years before being buried there.
