Since its re-discovery, numerous archaeological expeditions have worked and are still working in Palmyra to bring to light its main monuments. Palmyra is today one of the biggest open-air archaeological sites not only in the Middle-East and Syria, but almost in the whole world. Only 30% of the ancient city of Palmyra is visible. The main visible monuments today are the valley of the temples (and especially the temples of Bel, Nabù, Baalshamin and Allat), the agora, the subterranean tombs, the tower-tombs, the theatre, the thermal baths and the Diocletian camp. All these ruins date back from the 1st to the 3rd century A.D. An Arabic castle (from the 12th, 13th century A.D.), built on a hill overlooking the site, can also be visited.
