The Valley of Tombs from the citadel
Many tombs have been brought to light in Palmyra and can be admired in the particular area called the Valley of the Tombs, the Southern cemetery of Palmyra. According to their architecture, three types of tombs can be identified: the tower tombs have five floors, each floor hosts one family; the subterranean tombs were built underground, with several chambers; there were also tombs in the shape of houses. The tombs in Palmyra are rich in architecture, decorations, sarcophaguses and frescoes.
