There is life in the desert
Palmyra from the citadel
Even if it is hard to believe for European tourists, one can survive and even live in the desert, thanks to the presence of natural springs. It seldom rains in the desert, but its inhabitants know perfectly well where to find water. The Bedouin move where the springs are, according to the seasons, as they have been doing for centuries. The biggest spring in the Syrian desert is the spring of Palmyra which was created by rainfall. In the past, it is testified that rainfall was much more abundant than today, and this made the oasis of Palmyra a much richer and more attractive place for local populations.
