The basilica of Saint Simeon
The term "Christian" appeared for the first time in Antioch, the ancient city located on the eastern side of the Orontes river, about 30 km from the sea. But Christianity was far from being the only religion of the region. The pagan community was very strong: its culture mainly consisted of celebrations and feasts dedicated to powerful gods, such as Dionysus. The pagan gods were primarily called upon for protection and miracles. There was also a Jewish community, very attractive for pagans, who thereafter became Christians. Finally, the Christian community was composed of former Judaist believers, and others who had been attracted by the monotheist aspect of the new religion.
