A picture of the Evagrius
The site of Saint Simeon
Evagrius was a very famous Christian lawyer from Antioch who visited Saint Simeon on the 2nd of September 560. In his account, he states that the dome cap of the cruciform church had fallen apart. There was, already at the time, an open air courtyard. The pilgrims were not Westerners anymore, they mainly came from Constantinople. They were represented more and more by peasants coming to dance around the column or simply bringing their sheep. Women were not allowed to enter the Martyrium church, they could only stand next to the northern gates, which were not the most beautiful part of the Church.
