The site of Saint Simeon
From the 8th century, the site underwent a number of Byzantine and Muslim conquests. The construction of the site took place from the 5th to the 6th century. The site started however its decline from 610, together with the ensemble of the Dead Cities. Earthquakes, epidemics, invasions are the numerous factors of the region’s decline. The cult of Saint Simeon remained however alive, in particular in the Christian community, but he was a saint respected also by Muslims. Today, religious tourism is increasingly important in the site.
